Frequently Asked Questions
I haven’t done any reformer classes before. What can I expect from my first class?
- If you’ve never done reformer Pilates before, we recommend attending our beginner’s classes. Our instructor will guide you through how to use the reformers safely, you’ll learn about the basic Pilates principles and we’ll go through fundamental exercises at a slower pace. You’ll feel more confident with how to use the reformer and you’ll quickly realise how fun and versatile reformer can be!
What should I wear and bring to class?
- Wear something loose fitting or something comfortable that you would exercise or stretch in. Please avoid wearing something like denim jeans. We recommend students wear socks for hygienic reasons. These can be normal socks or grippy pilates/yoga socks. If you would like to buy a basic pair of non-slip socks, we do have some available for purchase. Also, feel free to bring a bottle of water and a towel.
How many times a week should I attend classes?
- To see the best results, we recommend attending at least 2-3 times a week with at least one or two days rest in between each class to allow for enough recovery. Most of our students enjoy attending twice a week. However, if you are unable to attend more than once a week, this is also okay. Just be mindful that you may notice improvements at a slower rate.
How big are your classes?
- We have 7 reformers. 1 reformer is for the instructor, while the other 6 are for students. We have a maximum of 6 students in class, keeping the group relatively small. This allows for our instructors to provide one on one interaction and corrections.
I’m really sore after attending a class. Is that normal?
- Yes, this is generally normal. Muscle soreness can develop later in the same day or the next day after class. You may feel sore for a day or up to a week and in some cases, a little longer than a week. The amount of soreness you experience varies from person to person and will depend on factors such as exercise history, rate of recovery, lifestyle factors etc. If you are a beginner, it is common to experience muscle soreness and with time, as your muscles become stronger, the soreness will typically lessen.
Is reformer safe during pregnancy?
- The short answer is, it depends. If you have been cleared to continue exercising during pregnancy and feel well enough, then reformer is generally safe as it is a low impact workout and exercises are modified to suit pregnant individuals. Please note that your ability to continue exercising will vary from individual to individual and can change at any stage during pregnancy. We have had some pregnant women continue classes up until a week or two before they were due to give birth.
I have a specific injury. Can I attend classes?
- For specific injuries, we recommend making an appointment with one of our friendly physiotherapists to check whether you are ready for reformer group classes. You may require physio treatment first or private 1 on 1 sessions before attending reformer group classes. To book in with one of our physiotherapists, please call us on 9746 6622 or email us on admin@essencephysio.com.au
